New York Turkey Dogs

The New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut, turkey dog hunters must've been close to going underground by the time of the Pequot War (1634 to 1638). By then, wild turkeys were already becoming scarce:

"You know our fathers had plenty of deer and skins, our plains were full of deer, also our woods, and of turkies, and our coves full of fish and fowl," the tribe's sachem, Miantonomi, told the Montauk of Long Island. "But these English have gotten our land, they with scythes cut down the grass, and with axes fell the trees; their cows and horses eat the grass, and their hogs spoil our clam banks, and we shall be starved." By the early 1700's, game in the Piedmont region became scarce. By 1750, the virgin Appalachians as far west as Kentucky would be hunted out.
